Clyo is an unincorporated community in Effingham County, Georgia, in the coastal plain northwest of Savannah. It lies along Georgia State Route 119, about eight miles north-northeast of Springfield, the county seat, and has a post office serving ZIP code 31303. The community's name comes from Clio, the muse of history in Greek mythology, and it carries one of the county's oldest historical claims: the river-landing settlement of Tuckasee King, within present-day Clyo, served as the Effingham County seat from 1784 to 1787, in the years immediately after the county's founding. Effingham County has long been agricultural, with farming and timber forming the backbone of local life, and Clyo reflects that rural heritage. The community is small and dispersed, with residences and small farms spread along State Route 119 and the surrounding county roads. A post office has operated under the Clyo name since 1897, and the county maintains the Clyo Community Center and Park on Fair Street as a local gathering place and recreation facility.
