Gillsville is a small city in northeast Georgia that straddles the Hall County and Banks County line, roughly north of Gainesville along State Highway 52. Its name comes from the local Gills family, and its identity is inseparable from the folk pottery tradition that took root in north Georgia in the nineteenth century. Gillsville was one of eight pottery centers established in the state, and it became one of Georgia's enduring "jugtowns," where family-run shops passed down shapes, glazes, and handcrafting techniques from one generation to the next. That pottery heritage remains the defining fact of Gillsville. Hewell's Pottery began operating as a family venture in 1850 and is celebrated to this day, alongside other pottery families and shops in the area. The Gillsville Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving the small-town fabric of a community whose craft traditions set it apart from other rural crossroads in the region. A pottery festival and working studios keep the tradition alive as both a livelihood and a point of local identity. Gillsville's population is small, only a few hundred people, split between the Hall County portion and a smaller Banks County portion. The town is quiet and rural, with modest homes, farmhouses, and countryside spreading outward from the highway corridor. Public school students attend the Hall County School District or the Banks County School District depending on which side of the county line they live on. For residents, Gillsville offers a genuinely rural, small-town way of life within reach of Gainesville's employment and services and the broader amenities of northeast Georgia.
