Chattanooga Gateway on the Georgia Line

Apartments in Rossville, GA

Welcome to Rossville, the Walker County city that borders Chattanooga, Tennessee, and carries Cherokee and Civil War history at the foot of Missionary Ridge.

Rossville is a small city in Walker County, Georgia, pressed against the Tennessee border on the southern edge of Chattanooga. The two communities form a continuous urban area, with Rossville functioning as the Georgia side of a metro whose center of gravity lies across the state line. Missionary Ridge defines its eastern edge, and downtown Chattanooga is only minutes away along the U.S. Route 27 corridor. The city's history runs deep. A post office has operated at Rossville since 1817, and the community takes its name from Cherokee Principal Chief John Ross, who lived nearby before the forced removal of the Cherokee people on the Trail of Tears. The John Ross House, a log cabin, survives as a National Historic Landmark, anchoring Rossville's identity as a place of Cherokee and Civil War significance. The Battle of Missionary Ridge, fought in 1863, unfolded on the heights just north and east of the community, and the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park preserves much of that ground nearby. Rossville incorporated as a city in 1905 and grew as a working-class companion to Chattanooga, tied to the railroads and later to the region's manufacturing economy centered in nearby Dalton. Today it remains a largely residential community within commuting distance of Chattanooga's employers and hospitals. For residents, Rossville's chief advantages are proximity and access. Chattanooga's downtown, riverfront, and arts scene are a short drive across the border, while Lookout Mountain, Rock City Gardens, and the Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park are regional landmarks just beyond the city limits. The result is a compact Georgia town that lives as part of a much larger Tennessee metropolis.
